was looking up 50s fashion for writing reasons and i CANNOT get over the outfits these girls are rocking

- This is bobby soxer fashion that originated in the 1940s, not 50s. Specifically, this 2016 Tumblr post attributes this photo to Life magazine in 1947

- The style was not considered masculine in its time (for commenters remarking on crossdressing laws); pants had been mainstream women’s fashion since the 30s and especially during WWII due to women in factory work. This was an extremely popular style associated with fans of popular music performers like Frank Sinatra. It was a teenage style in particular; the 40s saw the number of girls attending secondary school rise substantially, as did the number of teens with disposable incomes.

It’s fascinating to me that people under 30 are looking at very trendy look today and seeing gender nonconformity. It says more about what we consider “feminine” clothing to be today (Revealing? Low necklines? Translucent? Form-fitting? Curve-enhancing?) than the image itself.

American urban planning!

When I moved to my city, the shitty car I owned immediately died. Luckily, I thought, the apartment we’d moved to had a bus stop right outside and there were bus stops right down the road from my job, and the city’s website even had a convenient little route planner!

4 hours. The trip that took 20 minutes by car would require 4 hours, with multiple changeovers, to do on the bus.

When Americans say “public transportation sucks,” it’s not because we just hate the concept of public transportation; it’s because in most places it exists here, it is deliberately underfunded, underserved, and poorly implemented.

this is for those who despair over seeing ships or tropes that make them uncomfortable while they do their little scrolly-scroll on ao3, acting like they aren’t responsible for their own internet experience

(alternatively, the back button also works)

Grandmas were so right about puzzles and knitting and crocheting and solitaire and reading slow and slippers and baking and watching deer in the backyard send post

people love to compliment tiktok’s algorithm on how good it is at showing them updates to videos they’d seen in the past but tumblr, man. tumblr doesn’t even need an algorithm. it’s just a bunch of nosy ass people spreading around the information and it is almost always a reliable system. if i see a post on tuesday the update will come around on my dash by friday without fail

algorithm vs small town gossip

The algorithm wishes it could be as powerful as a small town with a secret.
